Ropa Vieja with a Guava Shake and Mariquitas with a garlic dressing
|Refugiado - Guava and Cheese Pastry|
Of course I experienced all of the above minus the quality of products. They were just as good as I remember - flaky and fresh pastries. Abigail and I ordered the Ropa Vieja sandwich with shredded beef and peppers because I wanted to relive the dish I had in Miami (read about it here). On the side we had Mariquitas - fried plantains with a wonderful garlic sauce that they gave waaay too little of. I ordered a guava shake to wash it all down.
Their pastries are so wonderful. You can tell they were just baked that day because of the flaky crusts and the freshness of the fillings. I can never look at the cheese danish from my coffee house the same way again. Porto's cheese rolls are too good. The filling is not too sweet and comes in just the right amount. If you like fruity fillings try the guava and cheese pastry, refugiado - it's tart and sweet. The potato balls have a light crisp but a hearty filling. Those are a must try. They are so popular you can get a sandwich with them inside. By the time we got to the Italian cheesecake we were so full but just had to try it. It was light and creamy and it had bits of pear throughout. A perfect size for an individual or two super full friends to share.
